Winter 2011
We pick the last crabapples in late May and early June. This little tree is almost breaking under its load of fruit but we tied it up well. Silke makes crabapple jam and pectin water. She uses pectin water to replace some of the sugar used to thicken jam.
Our building project for winter 2011: a new kitchen garden
We had to demolish the old kitchen garden before work on the extension started last year. This area was the closest garden to the house. We planted salad greens, herbs and more of those things here that you may need when you are in the middle of preparing a meal. It was sorely missed! The new kitchen garden was finished in late winter. It is fully netted. We used 4.8m poles on the bottom side and 3.0m poles on the top.

The netting is 10m wide and we have to sew two runs together to cover the full area and the sides.

We use two 2.4m by 1.2m planters for salads and strawberries. The area between the raised beds and the planters will become a grassy playground for the grandkids.

View up the hill. A large gate on the left allows us access with the tractor.

Some winter tasks

The boysenberries are cut back and tied up

The Faverolles are the best of our breeds to clean up the orchard in winter. They thoroughly scratch up the weeds but do not damage roots. After they are done we cover the beds in old hay.

We thin out the raspberries a lot so that they can get air and are less susceptible to yellow spotting

Left: apple trees on espaliers. We prune in winter but also in late summer. The winter pruning is the main one. This photo also shows how the beds look like after the Faverolles have cleaned them up during winter.

Right: Urmel had a little haircut, mainly around the eyes!

Our neighbours Sue and Warren have Saanen goats and four little goat kids! Silke, Britta, Lucy and Sophie have a look at Warren's little goats which are only a few days old!
