January 2008: a walk around the house

Summer harvest!

This Kennebec potato weighs 646g. Is that good or bad? It ends up as mashed potato and tastes very good!

The bore! It is 52m deep and delivers
6000 litres of water per hour.

The dry summer isn't very good for hay making. The grass hasn't grown too well, but we end up with 246 bales of hay. Enough for the ponies and the mulching for a year.

January 2008 in the kitchen garden

The corn has grown tall. We get three to five stalks from each seed!

Seven year runner beans ......

Bush beans Purple Queen

The Dutch Cream potatoes planted in October are now flowering..

The beans have almost reached the top of the teepee

Artichokes

On the left: Globe artichoke Purple de Jesi

On the right: Globe artichoke Green

January 2008  in the orchard

The orchard in the middle of summer. We deep water once a week but will need to water twice weekly if the very dry and warm conditions continue. No rain in January! It is the driest January in recorded history in Hobart. The Wellington apples in the right photo are doing very well, though.

January 2008  in the vegie garden

The tomato plants are full of fruit in January.

Tigerella tomatoes

The potato plants are now dying back.

Corn inter-planted with pumpkins. The potatoes grown in the front row are now gone and we have put in a late experimental planting of Royal Burgundy and Cherokee Wax bush beans. On the right they were planted on December 27th and are doing well. On the left they were planted on January 9th and are struggling.

Asparagus on the left is growing vigorously.

Golden Nugget pumpkins

 Butternut pumpkins

January 23rd: Red Kidney Beans planted on January 3rd.

January 27th: The same Red
Kidney Beans only four days later!

Corn, broad beans, zucchini,
pumpkin and cucumber food forest.
These plants support each other well.

The corn tasselated in  January.

The tomatoes in the greenhouse are
starting to produce

Eggplants in the greenhouse

Cucumbers in the greenhouse

The first cucumbers in the greenhouse!

We plant many flowers and herbs to attract bees to the garden. The borage in the right photo is doing especially well and is always full of bees.

Scarlet Emperor runner beans planted on December 6th

Royal Burgundy bush beans planted on December 6th

Kentucky Wonder climbing beans planted on December 6th.
