August 29th, 2008:
A walk through the gardens

The animals enjoy the warm weather. Temperatures reach amazing 15 degree today. Almost a bit too warm for the ponies with their heavy winter  coats.

  The vegetable garden

The green manure started to form flowers and we slashed it to keep the nutrients in the soil. In  the middle: a row of Pink Eye potatoes.
Right: the broad beans from the greenhouse are now planted out. And the Chinese cabbages, Sugarloaf cabbages and mini cauliflowers raised in the greenhouse are doing well.

Last season we spent far too much time hand watering everything. Now we use drip lines on the rotation beds. They are pressure controlled and should provide equal water at each dripper almost regardless of line pressure.

Lettuce and spinach in pots provided us with fresh greens all winter.

Sown in the green house in August:
(seeds from 'The Lost Seed')
climbing peas - sugar snap
bush peas - sugar snap & Southern Cross
broccoli - 2 kinds green sprouting
cabbages - red & Brunswick (for sauerkraut)
squash
spinach - American curled & Bloomsdale longstand.
corn salad
basil - to grow as companion plants for tomatoes
coriander
cucumber - Wisconsin Pickling
onions - red & pearl
pumpkins - butternut & golden nugget

Left: leek and red cabbage

Right: potato onions

The orchards

the hazelnuts are budding
The large orchard:

companion planting with apricot tree, lavender and daffodil

the orchards have been "spring cleaned"

The small orchard:
we have planted six red currants and six black currants along the fences.

August 31st, 2008 - A new berry orchard:
this new berry orchard is fully netted against birds and will be our main area for berries. We used orchard netting and with the help of Klaas, Kristine and Britta it only took a few hours to cover the 9m by 10m berry orchard.

The kitchen garden

first silverbeet seedlings

onions

garlic "Tassie Purple"

Brussels Sprouts planted in January

Sugarloaf cabbages grown from seed in the greenhouse and now planted out into a bed where green manure was just slashed and dug in.

We are still eating from these Brussels sprouts which were planted fourteen months ago.
