November 2007: a walk around the house

Left: fresh green grass grows on all paddocks.

Right: we take the big step and ask a "dowser" to look for water on our property. I really have to bite my tongue very hard to avoid laughing, as he walks across the land with his wishbone made from a willow branch. Finally the verdict is in: the rock and the stick mark the spot. 1600 litres of water in 170 feet depth. This is where we will drill. Do we really believe in dowsing? Maybe not, but the drilling contractor insisted on having the dowser here before he would start.

The olive grove.

The ten apple trees in the small orchard.

The aqua dulce broad beans. Some still suffer from the ash treatment.

Big broad beans in November

Chilean guava and chives

Sugar snap peas, spinach and mustard

Telephone peas

red bergamot

Brassica seedlings from greenhouse

Corn seedlings from greenhouse

Overwintering sugarloaf and red cabbages

We planted various types of potatoes between August and October. The photo on the right shows the Dutch Cream potatoes planted on October 21st, our last batch.

This year's trees.

Two grapes

Red and black currants

Red currants

Raspberries

Raspberries

Jostaberries

Loganberries

The blueberries look promising.

Cherries! But the tree drops them before they have time to ripen.

Nectarines. We pick off all the fruit, though. The nectarine tree showed heave leave curl last summer and we treated it with Bordeaux. It still isn't very strong.

Apple Irish Peach

Apple Wellington
