December 2007: a walk around the house

This is our first year with real harvests of all kinds. We blanch and freeze many kilos of broad beans, zucchinis, strawberries, raspberries, loganberries, boysenberries and blueberries. Carrots, potatoes, lettuces, kohlrabi and much, much more.

Two chestnut trees. The tree on the left is doing very well. We planted them eighteen months ago. The tree on the right was "pruned" by a possum. It is slowly dying now.

Tomato plants. Last year Currawongs discovered that tomatoes taste very nice! This year we plan to fold the chicken wire over the plants when the tomatoes ripen, to protect them against the big black birds.

This is the last section of potatoes which we planted in the vegie garden. They are Kennebec and Tasman potatoes and were planted on October 10th.

Two rows of broad beans interplanted with brassica.

These are Coles Dwarf and Early Long Pod. They don't grow as high as Aqua Dulce and don't need to be supported.

Left: potatoes
Middle rows: corn, broad beans, cucumber, zucchini, pumpkins
Right: asparagus

By the middle of December Britta harvests the first potatoes.

Christmas 2007

We celebrate Christmas in the middle of a very dry summer.
