Spinach

Sow March to April, September to December, harvest all year by picking individual leaves. Sow directly wherever there is space in the garden beds.

Sow in greenhouse in May, then separate seedlings, keep well-spaced in larger pots and keep in greenhouse to use from there.

Sow in greenhouse in August to plant out in garden in September.

Use spinach cooked or, mainly the young leaves in salads.

Bolting is a problem with spinach, we had best results with ‘Southern European’ and ‘Bloomsdale Longstanding’, both from ‘The Lost Seed’. We also grew English Spinach ‘Winter Giant’ from ‘The Lost Seed’ in March and April. Germination rate was lower than before, but the plants did not bolt and we had spinach all through winter.
