| A large section of our land is of poor quality. The horses
compacted parts of the bottom paddock which suffer from flooding in
heavy rains. A lot of bracken grows at the fringes of the grassed areas.
Pigs are supposed to be excellent diggers and they are supposed to get
rid of the bracken and aerate the soil. We had to give it a try! In
November three little miniature piglets joined us here, two sows and a
boar. After a few months we separated the boar from the females. Once
they are a bit older they can run together again.
Yes, the pigs turned out to be very good diggers! They spend all day
with their snout in the soil and will dig everything up and really turn
over the soil. After the pigs have finished and their enclosure is moved
to a new spot we spread hay over the "worked" areas and new
grass will grow.
