I often grow onions in winter from seedlings raised in my greenhouse rather than from direct sowing. In winter onions take a long time to germinate and are difficult to distinguish from weeds that usually have grown plentiful when the onions finally have germinated.

Sow into soil that has been limed and fertilized some time before sowing. Avoid use of manure and fresh fertilizers. Make rows 50 cm apart. Keep beds well weeded.
