Onions

Companion planting:
Like: cabbages, chamomile, carrots, leek, lettuce, marjoram, parsley, parsnip, strawberries, tomatoes
Dislike: peas and beans

The following are only guidelines taken from a variety of books. I grew onions in the last two years with inconclusive results. Only spring onions always grew well.

Long keepers:
Sow June to September, harvest February to April
Varieties used:
Brown Spanish
Pukehohe
Creamgold

Salad onions:
Sow March to December, harvest September to May
Varieties used:
White Spanish types
Red odourless
Early Californian red (Mr Fothergill’s)
Red Sheffield (The Lost Seed)

Potato onions:
Plant June to August, harvest December to January

Spring onions:
Sow September to June, harvest September to February

Sow into soil that has been limed and fertilized some time before sowing. Avoid use of manure and fresh fertilizers. Make rows 50 cm apart. Keep beds well weeded. Later sow carrots between rows as companion plants.
