Garlic

Companion planting:
Likes: fruit trees, lavender, parsley, rosemary, roses, strawberries
Dislikes: beans, peas

Plant garlic cloves April, harvest December
Varieties used:
Tassie Purple (Southern Harvest)

Plant 5 cm deep, 15cm apart in well-fertilized soil, fertilize again in August; garlic likes well drained soil. Harvest when about half the leaves have dried off. Don’t water garlic 2-3 weeks before harvest; harvest in dry weather.

Tie garlic into bunches of 10 to 15 with twine. Hang to cure in a dry, well-ventilated room. You can plait the garlic after two weeks and hang again for two more weeks. Alternatively clip off the root and the tops and store in a cool, dry place. Smaller size garlic keeps better than larger sized. Don’t store garlic in the fridge.
