| Bill Mollison, one of the founders of Permaculture, is
quoted as saying: "you don't have a snail problem. You have a duck
deficiency!" We certainly don't have a duck deficiency any more!
Snails and slugs were a problem in the vegie garden and the kitchen
garden when the young peas and beans emerged from the ground. We used to
pick them off the plants by torch light in the middle of the night. But
now we have ducks! And they should do that for us. Our first ducks are
Indian Runner ducks. They are a breed of duck who will not only eat slugs
but also hard shelled snails.
The vegie garden and the kitchen garden both have a duck house with a
small run attached to them. The ducks shelter in their houses at night.
During the day they either free-range or are allowed into the garden.
Ducks can be contained easily behind knee-high fences and we used small
temporary barriers to keep them away from areas in the garden where they
could cause damage.
