Sweetcorn 

Sow in greenhouse in September, plant out end of October to early November, also sow directly in garden in October to early November. 10ºC needed for germination. Harvest January to April.

Sow or plant corn 40 cm apart, 2 cm deep. Sow in blocks for best pollination results. Harvest when silks are dry and brown.

We had the best yield from 'Golden Bantam' (The Lost Seed), but this variety is not nearly as sweet as the hybrids. In the 2008/09 season we tried several hybrids and found that the hybrids tasted a lot better than Golden Bantam, but yield was lower and often the cobs had only half the kernels. But as this season was so difficult weather-wise the results are inconclusive.

Preserving:
Remove silk, wash, water blanche for 4 minutes, cool quickly, cut kernels from cob and freeze.
