Asian Brassica

Companion planting:
Likes: beans, chamomile, celery, coriander, cucumber, dill, marigold, lettuce, marjoram, mint, nasturtiums, onions, oregano, peas, potatoes, tomatoes
Dislikes: strawberries

Sow November to early March, harvest January to May
Sowing before February often results in bolting, though we had excellent results with 'Red Pak Choi F1
' (Diggers), sown in November.

Sow four or five seeds in a clump, a bit apart, space clumps at least 60 cm apart. Then gradually thin out seedlings. Thin before the seedlings touch each other. Side-dress. Water well.

All brassica are attacked by the cabbage moth and the cabbage white butterfly. Companion-planting with marigold, dill and oregano helps, also scattering crushed eggshells around the plants. If infestation is heavy spray with Dipel (try mixing in a drop of detergent to help the droplets to cling to the leaves).

We don’t preserve many of the Brassicas as we have a steady supply throughout the year.
